At the 94th Academy Awards,TV Series Archives Jane Campion, director of The Power of the Dog, became the third woman to ever win the Oscar for Best Director. The award has previously been won in 2010 by Kathryn Bigelow, director of The Hurt Locker, and in 2021 by Chloé Zhao, director of Nomadland.

This marks Campion's second nomination for Best Director — she is the only woman to have been nominated twice. Her first nomination came in 1994, for The Piano. In her speech, she thanked the Academy, saying "it's a lifetime honor."
